Analysis of John Donne’s poem “The Canonization” Essay

The poem â€Å"The Canonization† written by John Donne is about love. Throughout this poem Donne reveals both concepts of physical love and spiritual love. The words that Donne has chosen in this poem are an example of a poetic technique that not only allows the reader to understand the speaker, but also be able to see images based on his word choice about the different aspects of love. In the first stanza the opening line is â€Å"For God’s sake, hold your tongue, and let me love!† This line shows the importance of love to the speaker in this poem when he demands to let him love. The speaker also refers to the physical aspects of himself in lines two and three † my palsy or my gout, My five gray hairs†, which gives the reader an image of an older person. The first three lines show that true love is powerful, that it is not based on physical attributes, and that love is timeless. Unlike the artificial love that the speaker refers to in line seven as the â€Å"[king’s] stamped face†. The third stanza represents the uncertainty that people face while they are falling in love. This particular stanza is mostly rhetorical questions about his feelings. For example in lines eleven through thirteen says, â€Å"What merchant ships have my sighs drowned? Who says my tears have overflowed his ground? When did my colds a forward spring remove?† These lines speak of his possible sadness and risk of heartache by falling in love. While at the end of this stanza the speaker answers all of his own questions with the statement â€Å"Though she and I do love.† in line eighteen. Meaning that regardless of the bad things in life that could happen the speaker and his lover will love one another. Throughout the fifth stanza Donne describes the spiritual aspect of love through the speaker, while at the same time through certain words the speaker is saying Donne is showing the reader the physical love between the speaker and his lover. By doing this Donne shows that spiritual and physical love may be different, but they are also connected. An example of these two aspects of love being shown at the same time is in line twenty and twenty-one â€Å"Call her one, me another fly; We are tapers too, and at out own cost die;† These lines Donne uses the metaphor of a moth drawn to a flame.  This being a metaphor of spiritual love is about how the speaker is destined to be with his lover and how he is drawn to her. On the other hand, in line twenty-one it says, â€Å"We are tapers too, and at our own cost die;† This line is a metaphor of a candle, which is a symbol of love and a source of heat. This metaphor shows the reader the physical passion between these two lovers and the way Donne uses the word â€Å"die† in line twenty-one is referring to an orgasm between these two lovers. Within this one line he shows that the speaker and his lover are both physically and spiritually connected. In addition, stanza five and six they both enforce the idea of living and dying for love when lines twenty – one, twenty – six, and twenty – eight that state â€Å"at our own cost die †¦ We die and rise the same †¦ We can die by it, if not live by love,† These means that the two lovers will always be connected, although in time they will die a physical death they will live on to be â€Å"A pattern of †¦ love!† in line forty – five. Meaning that because of their love they will live on throughout time being â€Å"a pattern† for future generations of lovers. Finally, Donne is a very skillful poet by using one word to have multiple meanings. This poem is full of imagery that allowed the reader to fully understand the two concepts of love while explaining one through words and showing the other by using those same words. This concept of spiritual and physical love being different, but at the same time connected to one another is very interesting. â€Å"The Canonization† is not only about the relationship between the speaker and his lover, but between all men and women who are in love, falling in love, and waiting to love and be loved in return.

Although it was classified as a high risk case, the reports from the various parties were that the child was comfortable and happy during home visits and evaluations. It is arguable therefore that the social worker was reasonable in not spending more time and resources on trying to force more home visits on the mother of baby P. Without the value of hindsight, it is arguable that all social workers would like to give parents the benefit of the doubt, as is an occupational hazard. The tragedy of the events should not be judged with this hindsight as it risks being an armchair critic, wise after the events. Methodology The methodology used will be to examine various secondary sources of information relating to the outcomes of SCR for the professionals involved. This will determine whether measures taken against the professionals were extreme in the circumstances, but also whether there is an impact of these SCR on the organizations themselves. The current plans for restructuring of this public sector will also be considered in light of the criticisms raised by the various reports published on the protection of children and the progress made towards those goals. The suggestions forwarded by the Munro report (2011) and the BASW report (2012) will be considered in order to determine whether these suggestions will have a positive impact on the flailing morale and current problems with the social welfare profession. Conclusion and Recommendations The purpose of this research is not to suggest that these failures by any part or member of the organization are in any way acceptable. The death of a child due to abuse and neglect is never acceptable in any situation and in all cases there is a need for SCR to determine if there has been professional negligence in failing to intervene timeously leading to the fatal outcome. In the case of Peter Conolly, where an error in professional judgment was held to be the cause, appropriate action must be taken against unqualified and negligent professionals in the industry. However, if these errors and mistakes are as a result of a resource constraint that could be described as unrelated to the competency of the social worker themselves, the organization should shoulder the responsibility for this failure to take appropriate preventative measures rather than chastising the social worker involved for the purposes of public accountability. The morale in this profession is at an all time low as it is and one cannot risk the further demotivation of staff in these organizations as it will lead for further slipping of standards. Expecting social workers to perform competently and adequately in an environment where their workload is far higher than normal, as well as burdening them with extra responsibilities and duties, not to mention the demotivating effect of fiscal change, is unreasonable in the circumstances and will have a negative effect in the long term on the profession of social welfare. The recommendation therefore will be to revise the disciplinary procedures in SCR in order to firstly determine if there has been a failure of the organization or organizations involved in the case to determine the cause of failure of duty. Such an inquiry should lead to a discovery of professional negligence if such negligence existed in the case. Invariably an examination of the entire procedure and events should yield a fairly conclusive result as to the cause of the failure. Thereafter, any professional failures on the part of a specific social worker or other involved professional should be dealt with in the appropriate manner. A further recommendation is to reallocate certain resources to these organizations so that certain pressures may be relieved. This may include the assignment of additional administrative staff, inclusion of training in work schedules, the immediate filling of departmental vacancies so as not to overburden the social workers and certain tenure for these professionals as there is a clear concern for job security in these circumstances. Since the solar cookers invention, it has taken on three basic forms; the box solar cooker, the panel solar cooker, and the parabolic solar cooker. Like many renewable energy applications, each design has distinct advantages and drawbacks over traditional cookers as well as other solar designs.
